The Human in the Landscape - Olivia Irvine

The Human in the Landscape......

22nd June 2020 - 26th April 2020

4 nights residential art workshop holiday

3 days tutorial with Olivia Irvine

Course Details

During this workshop we will look at ways to show human presence in nature.  Working in sketchbooks we will gather a lot of information in the beautiful area in and around the farm. This will include landscape, machinery, architecture and maybe a figure or two – even footprints and shadows can show a human presence. The emphasis will be on contrast of shape and tone, creating dynamic compositions where the human presence forms just a part of the whole. Back in the studio we will translate this information into monoprints and collage. These will form the basis of some paintings, in oil or acrylic, that say something about our relationship to the landscape.

Class Schedule - The workshop

Day 1

Morning: Introduction, demonstration of thumbnail sketches, sketching outdoor around the farm.
Afternoon: Demonstration of monoprinting techniques. We will each create a range of monoprints with black ink based on our sketches but allowing ourselves to interpret them freely and add in our imagination. The figures will be seen as shapes rather than anatomically accurate portraits.

Day 2

Morning: Sketching trip to Seahouses. We will further explore contrasts, composition and the human presence.
Afternoon: More monoprinting, but this time using colour. We will experiment with collage as a way of loosening up and finding interesting compositions.

The Artist

I sketch a lot wherever I am. I love trees, people, beaches, gardens and buildings. I am very specific about how my drawing is pieced together in terms of design yet I am loose with my marks. My paintings are imaginative, made up of many sketches as well as memory and imagination. There is usually a person or two, and sometimes an animal, piece of furniture or picnic rug! I am particulrlry fascinated by colour. I do a lot of monoprints as a way of loosening up and working out compositions.
