We were excited to welcome folk sensations and BBC Young Folk Award semi finalists Rachel Unthank and the Unthanks to Springhill Farm last weekend.  The incredible sound of their voices filled the farm last weekend as Rachel and her fellow musicians rang out song after song of lilting tradition-cum-modern folk music. To us, their singing seemed to match the spirit of what we and our guests love about Springhill and our farm’s location – beautiful, unique and one that ever changing.  The BBC Website Live Review said of the Unthanks: Every now and again, and I mean, every now and again, once in a blue moon type of every now and again, you hear music that is so complete, so wonderful, unique and yet familiar that it stops you in your tracks. Although we call them wigwams, our distinctive wooden holiday homes are inspired by the upturned boat sheds at nearby Holy Island. The upturned boats on the Island were once part of the largest herring fleet to sail from the east coast of England. Once they became unseaworthy they were turned upside down and used as sheds instead. Here at Springhill our family has roots in the herring and sea fishing industry as well as farming. Our Uncle Charlie was a real local character who used to fish the waters off the coastline here. We’ve named one of our wigwams after him, as a mark of respect and appreciation for what he did and as a nod to Springhill’s fishing heritage.
